Health and ageing expert to lead National Seniors' research

National Seniors Australia has appointed health and ageing expert Professor John McCallum to spearhead research as the consumer lobby group’s new Research Director.

Queensland-born Prof McCallum has an extensive university career, working on major research projects, both in Australia and overseas.

These include the Dubbo Longitudinal Study and the Australia-Japan Collaboration in Aged Care, Asset and Health Dynamics of the ‘Old’ Old (AHEAD), Vietnam Veterans Mortality Study and many national policy projects.

Prof McCallum also established the Research Translation Group at the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the start-up of the National Institute for Dementia Research.

Chief Executive Dagmar Parsons said the appointment of Prof McCallum signalled the start of an exciting new chapter for National Seniors.

“We are developing our research and knowledge centre to step up informed and meaningful discussions and support our advocacy agenda,” Ms Parsons said.

“Professor McCallum will drive our research functions and lead our collaboration with other research organisations, both nationally and internationally.”

Ms Parsons also said 2017 would mark an important new chapter for National Seniors, its members and its advocacy for the over-50s.

“We are delighted to have Professor McCallum as our Research Director, building on the impressive work already carried out by our research arm.

“He will use his wealth of research experience to add to the sum of knowledge on ageing and to help improve the lives and well-being of older Australians.”
