Consumer Protection

National Seniors Australia work hard to ensure the country’s most vulnerable elderly consumers are protected from being victims of aggressive marketing tactics or rip-off schemes.

In 2012 we led a campaign on behalf of members and the wider public calling on the government to consider the implementation of a ‘Do Not Knock’ register, similar to the Do Not Call register. While a parliamentary committee rejected a register, courts have ruled that door-to-door sales people need to heed ‘Do Not Knock’ stickers and requests to vacate private property, otherwise the company which they represent may face heavy penalties.

We’ve also campaigned on the difficulty for those aged 70 and over in obtaining travel insurance or affordable travel insurance, preventing them from travelling overseas. Almost a third of respondents from a 2012 survey reported that they have had to pay higher travel insurance premiums because of their age.
