​National Seniors Australia is embarking on a digital mentor program training volunteers around the country to give them the confidence to help others with technology.

Digital Mentoring: Helping your community be connected' is a federally funded project aimed at helping every Australian acquire the skills to get online using the Be Connected learning platform.

Volunteer mentors receive one full day of training and ongoing support via webinar. Training is free and includes catering and training materials.


What is Be Connected?

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner and Good Things Foundation have developed the online learning program, Be Connected. This free learning program contains easy to follow click-through modules on a range of topics aimed at helping older Australians connect digitally. Modules start at the very basics to set up a device and progress into other topics like connecting to others, staying safe online, and online hobbies like researching family history, playing games and listening to music.

What training/support will you receive?

Volunteer mentors will be given one full day of face-to-face training, and ongoing support via webinar. Training is free and includes catering and training materials. Travel costs not included.

What resources will you have access to?

Mentors will use the Be Connected learning platform to deliver training. Mentors can access lesson plans, marketing templates and a range of other resources on the Be Connected Network site. Mentors are also eligible to apply for the $2,000 activation grant without an ABN. Funds can be used to cover the expense of delivering training including IT purchases, travel expenses, printing costs, etc. If mentors access the grant they will have an obligation to train 30 learners.

Do I need to be a tech wizard?

No. A person with a reasonable level of digital skill (e.g. has used computers for work or uses Facebook/email) would be a great mentor.

What are your obligations?

Volunteer digital mentors must consent to a police check which will be paid for by National Seniors Australia. Volunteer mentors must also complete three surveys along the way, attend the face-to-face training and participate in at least one of the National Seniors hosted volunteer mentor webinars (up to two hours). Given the requirement to participate in at least one webinar, mentors will need access to a computer, tablet or smartphone with internet and webcam/microphone/speaker, to participate.

Who will I be helping?

Mentors will be provided the details of National Seniors branches who may be interested in receiving training. It is expected the mentors will reach out to other seniors’ groups in their area to offer assistance. It is up to each mentor to coordinate their own training schedule, decide how much time they can give to mentoring and which groups they are able to assist. Training can be given in small groups or one-on-one.
