Spend up – these government giveaways will help
We’re being encouraged to spend up and boost the economy during the pandemic. State and Territory governments are making that easier with some surprising incentives and discounts that can save you money. Here’s what’s on offer.

Recently, the state government opened up a scheme for regional travellers. Spend $400 on two or more nights accommodation in regional Victoria and claim a $200 voucher. You can find out more and register here.
‘Dine and Discover NSW’ is being trialled. The aim is to get us out and about to restaurants and arts and tourism businesses in Sydney and Broken Hill. Residents will be eligible for two $25 vouchers to be used for eating in restaurants and cafes and two $25 vouchers to be used for entertainment and recreation.
There’s a plan to expand early next year but you must have a MyServiceNSW account to apply.
Although it was supposed to end on December 21, you might like to check out whether this discount is still available. It is a daily pack of discount vouchers totalling $40 to spend at participating local businesses, from accommodation, retail, food and drinks to personal care. The catch is there is a minimum spend and you need to sign up here.
The government is offering a tourism voucher for residents worth up to $200 if they spend $200 of their own money. The second round is currently open for registration and the next round will launch in February 2021.
Sadly, the state government’s tourism voucher has ended but you might still be able to access the City of Hobart’s food and beverage vouchers (available here from January 7).
