National Seniors continues to fight for a fairer deal for older Australians seeking employment.
It is Australia’s nasty ‘hidden’ shame that employers and recruitment agencies continue to discriminate against people on the basis of age.
Australians aged between 45 and 65 now make up about half of all unemployment support recipients, with more than 330,000 on the welfare payment as of September last year.
When we shared an ABC News report on ageism in recruiting, we received the following responses from our Facebook followers.
"I have been told I was 'over experienced.'"
"I am sick of being asked my date of birth by people who are trying to evaluate whether or not I am of sound mind...If you are over 60, a lot of people infer that you are brain dead."
"I’ve been asked leading questions to ascertain whether I would be able to fit in with younger employees."
"They prefer younger workers as they are cheaper to pay... A win for the businesses. A loss for older workers... They (the government) only increase our retirement age so they don’t have to pay a full pension."
There were also responses from those who had experienced ageism in the workplace.
"I was once told by a very difficult staff member I was trying to correct that I was 'past my use by date.'"
"I was told by a 30 year old manager that 'everyone over 35 has to go'. I wonder how he feels now he's over 35?"
Of course, employers deny they are guilty of ageism.
The report below appears to indicate otherwise.
