Accessible housing design standards

We're lobbying to change the National Construction Code (NCC) which will make new housing age-friendly and facilitate more downsizing options.

The issue

In 2021, Building Ministers agreed to mandatory minimum accessibility standards in the National Construction Code (NCC). But not every state and territory has committed to implementing the new Code.

Our recommendation

We recommend that all governments commit to implementing the accessible design in the National Construction Code (NCC).

The benefits

Improved housing options for older Australians, enabling them to age safely and comfortably in the place of their choice.

The issue

Why the policy is needed

  • 92% of Australians want to remain in their own home as the age.
  • There are many challenges remaining at home, especially when physical or cognitive impairment becomes an issue.
  • Accessible housing design helps meet the needs of people with mobility restrictions related to age or disability.

Older Australians should have more housing choices.

There is a lack of housing with accessible design features suitable for people as they get older.

In 2021, the nation’s Building Ministers agreed to the inclusion of mandatory minimum accessibility standards in the National Construction Code (NCC). We have been advocating for this change as part of our ongoing Better Housing campaign. Accessible housing design helps meet the needs of people with mobility restrictions related to age or disability.

This is a major win for older Australians. But not every state and territory has committed to implementing the new Code.

We're campaigning for minimal accessible design features to be included in all new homes.

The benefits

Changing the National Construction Code (NCC) will make new housing age-friendly and facilitate more downsizing options.
Improvements to housing options will enable older Australians to age safely and comfortably in the place of their choice.
