PCYC Queensland is usually known for its youth programs and sport and recreation, but it also runs RUBY, a successful program helping survivors of domestic violence.
RUBY (Rise Up, Be Yourself) empowers women through physical exercise with a personal trainer, companionship through regular weekly meetings, and connection to community support.
It provides a safe place for women to socialise and exercise, while accessing support from community organisations and building positive relationships with female Queensland Police Service officers and personal trainers.
Designed to enhance women’s general well-being, RUBY supports emotional resilience, self-esteem and confidence in a safe and welcoming environment.
Sessions include a one-hour exercise session to get the endorphins flowing followed by a group chat with women who understand each other over tea, coffee, and snacks.
“Ruby to me isn’t just a workout. I feel empowered and energised, but also confident and understood. I am ready to face my week, even on struggle days. I know the program is here for me next week! It’s an escape and a time for me and self-care. The program is a great support.” - RUBY program participant.
A spokesperson for PCYC said the organisation is proud to stand with these strong women on their recovery journey, offering support as they regain confidence and build new strength.
