In the winter edition of 50 Something, there’s much to warm you and your soul.

Internationally renowned soprano, Korea’s Sumi Jo, has been described as ‘a voice from above’ by Herbert von Karajan, principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years. Sumi Jo’s reputation as one of the greatest exponents of the bel canto (beautiful singing) repertoire is the result of a childhood devoted to music – piano, singing, ballet and languages for eight hours a day from the age of four. Sumi will visit Australia for her Mad for Love tour in July.

When it’s cold outside, there’s nothing nicer than sharing food in front of a flickering fire that warms the heart as much as the toes. Our food feature features advice on winter warmers from some of Australia’s top chefs, and includes recipes for a braised lamb shoulder and potato bake, along with a lentil, bean and smoked sausage soup.

If you’ve ever dreamt of heading to the Antarctic, turn to the travel pages for inspiration. You’ll discover that coldness and colour are just two of the common misconceptions about the world’s iciest continent. In summer, on the Antarctic Peninsula at least, it’s no colder than an Australian ski resort in winter – around +3 degrees C to -3 degrees C. And it’s largely shades of blue – from the palest baby through cornflower to cobalt and beyond.

One person who will be feeling the heat in June is Brisbane retiree Andy Steele, who is running the legendary Comrades, an 89km ultramarathon in South Africa after cycling the 1670km from Cape Town to the race start. Andy’s been in training for his extraordinary physical challenge for the past 18 months because it will raise money for needy South African children and mothers.

Closer to home, members and other older Australians will be pleased to read about National Seniors’ wins at the recent Federal Budget, that included extra high-level aged care packages, extra staff to deal with the half a million abandoned calls to Centrelink last year, an increase to the Pensioner Work Bonus to $7,800 pa, and an extension of the Pension Loans Scheme to all home owners of pension age, including non-pensioners.

Plus there’s lots more, including National Seniors’ latest research report for the Aged Care Workforce Strategy Taskforce that identified training needs for aged care workers delivering services in people’s homes.
