Man of many talents

Author Richard Osman was 50 when The Thursday Murder Club was published, making him a late bloomer as far as novel-writing goes.

However, before that he had already had a successful career as a television producer, mainly of panel and game shows, and presenter on Pointless and, more recently, Richard Osman’s House of Games

He also presents a podcast, The Rest is Entertainment, alongside journalist and screenwriter Marina Hyde.

Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series has captivated readers worldwide, blending a “cozy” crime with sharp wit and heartwarming characters.

Since the debut of the first book in 2020, the series has sold over five million copies globally, including more than 500,000 in Australia.

The books follow four spirited retirees – Elizabeth, Ron, Joyce, and Ibrahim – who live in a peaceful retirement village and spend their days solving cold cases. But things change when they start to find themselves entangled in real-life murders.

The series’ success has been largely attributed to its unique protagonists: seniors who defy stereotypes, bringing experience, intelligence, and humour to their amateur sleuthing. Osman’s portrayal of these characters has resonated with readers, offering a refreshing take on the detective genre.

Building on the books’ popularity, Netflix is set to release a film adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club on Thursday, 28 August.

Directed by Chris Columbus, known for the Home Alone and Harry Potter films, and produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, the movie boasts a star-studded cast.

Helen Mirren stars as Elizabeth, with Pierce Brosnan as Ron, Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim, and Celia Imrie as Joyce. The ensemble also includes David Tennant, Naomi Ackie, Jonathan Pryce, and Richard E. Grant.

This screen adaptation promises to deliver the same charm and intrigue that made the books a global phenomenon.

As fans eagerly await the film’s release, the Thursday Murder Club series continues to thrive, with a fifth instalment, The Impossible Fortune, scheduled for publication on 25 September – suggesting it may feature under many Christmas trees.

And, of course, there is already talk of future films in the franchise.

It seems Osman’s endearing characters are set to delight audiences for many years to come, both on the page and the screen.
