A day to remember
Star Wars fans are not the only people who will be observing 4 May.

Many Australians of a certain vintage allow themselves a smile of recognition when they notice the approach of Monday, 4 May.
That’s because it’s Star Wars Day – a celebration that originated with a pun. The phrase “May the fourth be with you” is a play on a famous line from the first Star Wars movie, now known as A New Hope, which premiered in 1977.
The original teenage fans of that film franchise may be contemplating retirement now, but the Fourth – sorry, the Force – remains strong in them.
But Star Wars is only the beginning when it comes to 4 May. According to the wonderfully comprehensive Days of the Year website, it is one of the most crowded dates on calendar.
At the serious end is International Firefighters’ Day, marked worldwide on 4 May in honour of those who risk their lives to save other people and their property.
The observance is especially meaningful to Australians as it was founded in 1999 by firefighter JJ Edmondson following a tragic bushfire that claimed five lives near Linton, Victoria.
Many Australians wear a symbolic blue-and-red ribbon – representing water over fire – on the day.
Health also gets a look‑in. Melanoma Monday sometimes falls on 4 May, as it does in 2026. With Australia having some of the world’s highest rates of melanoma, the reminder to check moles and be sun‑smart is particularly relevant as we head into the cooler months but still enjoy the outdoors.
Social causes are represented, too, with World Give Day nudging people toward small acts of generosity.
International Respect for Chickens Day asks us to think about animal welfare, while Bird Day, first observed back in the 1890s, celebrates our feathered friends more broadly.
Food and beverage lovers can raise a glass to National Orange Juice Day, and those with a sweet tooth might nibble candied orange peel, which also gets its own moment in the sun.
Oh, and it’s also Dave Brubeck Day, because the celebrated jazz musician’s signature tune, Take Five, is played in 5/4 time.
So, whether quoting Yoda you are, thanking a firefighter, or observing something else, Monday will be a fourth to be reckoned with.
