Census: why your answers matter

Answering these questions will help government agencies plan for every Australian’s future.

On Tuesday 11 August 2026, Australians will take part in the national Census, a once-every-five-years exercise conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The Census provides a comprehensive snapshot of Australia and helps build a clear picture of who we are, where we live, and how our communities are changing.

For seniors, the Census is important because it helps governments, community organisations, and service providers understand the needs of Australia’s ageing population.

Information collected through the Census is used to support planning for health services, aged care, public transport, housing, community facilities, and other essential services.

Census data also helps community groups, businesses, and governments make informed decisions about future programs and infrastructure.

The ABS emphasises that every answer matters. The information collected on Census night contributes to statistics that help shape decisions affecting local communities and the nation. By participating, individuals ensure that their community is accurately represented, and that planning reflects local needs and priorities.

The impact on aged care services is one area the ABS highlights, pointing to the work of the Partners In Culturally Appropriate Aged Care (PICAC) alliance.

“We analyse things like language and background to understand older people and their communities,” says Agnieszka Chudecka, Secretariat Lead at the PICAC alliance.

“Ultimately, when people are counted accurately, aged care providers can reflect the diversity of the communities they serve.”

The Census is also used to help provide support to veterans, with a question about defence force service included for the first time in the 2021 Census.

“Understanding who our veteran community is, the family structures in which they live and love, and the complexities they experience is fundamentally important. Census data ensures program and policy improvements are underpinned by facts, not assumptions, and service the actual needs of the community that we support,” said Veteran Family Commissioner, Annabelle Wilson.

Most households will be able to complete the Census online, and people can start, resume, and complete their form through the official website. The ABS also provides information explaining the Census questions, why they are asked, and how the data is used.

Recognising that some people may need assistance, the ABS has arranged a range of support options. Both online and in-person help will be available to assist people in completing their Census form, making participation easier for those who are less confident with technology or who require additional support. Language assistance and accessibility resources are also available.

Privacy and security remain a key focus of the Census. The ABS provides detailed information about how personal information is protected, including the laws and policies that safeguard Census data.

The ABS also advises Australians to be aware of scams and misinformation and directs people to official sources if they have questions or concerns.

As Census Day approaches, seniors are encouraged to watch for official ABS information and take part on 11 August 2026

By completing the Census, you help ensure that services, facilities and community planning reflect the realities of modern Australia. Your participation contributes to a stronger understanding of the nation and helps shape decisions that will benefit Australians for years to come.
