Delivering smiles with flowers

How one NSA member will brighten the lives of women in aged care this Sunday.

Save this Mother's Day

An app for giving gifts

National Seniors Australia’s EAT | PLAY | SAVE member discounts app offers access to thousands of deals across dining, shopping, and experiences, making it easier to give generously while staying within budget.

Members can find discounts on classic Mother’s Day favourites such as flowers and chocolates, or treat someone special to a relaxed afternoon tea, a restaurant meal, or a day spa or wellness experience at a reduced price.

Gift cards available through the app can also be a practical and flexible option, letting loved ones choose something they truly enjoy.

On special occasions such as Mother’s Day, a knock at the door can mean far more than a simple delivery.

For many women living in aged care, it can carry love from afar, rekindle memories, and brighten an entire day.

For several years now, National Seniors Australia (NSA) member Patrick Giles has been one of the people who make those moments happen.

Patrick, a retiree living on the NSW South Coast, has been delivering flowers to aged care homes and older people in their own homes for about five years.

What began as a practical way to lend a hand to a local business after the pandemic has become something much more meaningful – for both the people receiving the flowers and for Patrick himself.

“I’m retired, so I thought, what the heck,” Patrick says. “It’s just something I picked up.”

Patrick works with a florist in his area, stepping in during peak periods when demand surges. While the florist manages most deliveries during the week, occasions such as Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day are different.

“Mother’s Day in particular is just huge,” Patrick explains. “She’ll have extra staff making up arrangements, and off I go delivering them.”

Many of those deliveries are to aged care residences, which are places Patrick now knows well, even if finding his way through them isn’t always straightforward.

“Some of the nursing homes are like rabbit warrens,” he laughs.

But once he finds the right room, the reward is immediate. The reactions, he says, are a mix of surprise and delight.

“Quite often it’s, ‘Oh, are they for me?’” Patrick recalls, saying he has to handle each situation sensitively.

The flowers usually come from family – sometimes from nearby, sometimes from the other side of the world. Patrick often hears small but powerful snippets of the recipient’s life story when he makes a delivery.

“This is from my daughter in London,” one woman told him. Another might say of the person who sent the flowers, “She’ll be in later today.”

Those brief comments, Patrick says, are special.

On Mother’s Day especially, flowers become a tangible reminder that someone is thinking of them, even if they can’t be there in person.

“It doesn’t really matter where they come from,” Patrick reflects. “Flowers are just a treat.”

While much of Patrick’s work now involves aged care, his deliveries have taken him all over the region and introduced him to people with remarkable lives. One delivery still stands out: a woman in her 80s living on a small farm.

“She told me I’d just caught her, as she was about to jump in the shower before going off to help with the milking,” Patrick says. “Her son had a dairy just across the road.”

For Patrick, delivering flowers is more than just logistics. It’s a continuation of a lifetime of community involvement, including a long association with Rotary, and a way to stay active, connected, and useful in retirement.

“You’re helping out a small business, and you’re putting a smile on people’s faces,” he says. “Sometimes you might even be the only person they see that day.”

As Mother’s Day approaches, Patrick is ready once again to answer the call. He may not think of himself this way, but to many people in aged care and their families, he plays a role not unlike Santa Claus: arriving quietly, carrying a gift, and leaving joy behind.
