Essential skin checks now more accessible

Mobile clinics make potentially life-saving checks for sun cancers available in regional and remote areas.

Just because it’s winter, it doesn’t mean we should drop our guard about skin cancer.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and regular skin checks are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself.

The good news is that when detected early, most skin cancers can be successfully treated, making early detection critical.

HealthDirect Australia advises that everyone should become familiar with their own skin and check it regularly for changes. This includes looking for new spots, sores that do not heal, or moles that change in shape, colour, or size.

These subtle warning signs are often the first indication of a problem. In fact, many melanomas are initially detected by individuals themselves or by their partners or family members.

However, professional skin checks remain essential, particularly for people at higher risk, with experts recommending regular checks by a doctor and more frequent monitoring if risk factors are present.

While visiting a GP or dermatologist is a common way to get checked, new services are making skin checks more accessible than ever.

The Australian Skin Cancer Foundation’s mobile Skin Check Trucks are one such initiative, bringing free, professional skin checks directly to communities across the country.

These trucks operate as fully equipped mobile clinics, offering comprehensive full-body skin examinations using advanced technology, including 3D total body photography, and onsite biopsies when required.

Importantly, the service is provided at no cost and without the need for a referral, removing barriers that might otherwise prevent people from getting checked.

The convenience of these mobile clinics is particularly valuable for people living in regional and remote areas, where access to specialists can be limited.

Ultimately, checking your skin should be viewed as a routine part of maintaining your health.

Whether through self-examination, visits to your doctor, or community initiatives such as mobile skin check clinics, early action can make a life-saving difference.

As experts consistently emphasise, the earlier skin cancer is identified, the better the chance of successful treatment.
