Moments worth sharing

A groundbreaking Australian podcast about living with dementia enters its second season with a focus on carers.

Hold the Moment is a pioneering podcast by Dementia Australia that sheds light on the experience of people affected by dementia.

Launched in August 2024 and now in its second season, the podcast aims to reduce isolation and foster understanding by sharing real stories of those navigating life with dementia.

Co-hosted by Jim Rogers, who lives with younger onset dementia, and journalist Hamish Macdonald, whose father had dementia with Lewy bodies and Parkinson’s, the podcast offers a unique blend of personal insight and professional perspective.

Produced by Deadset Studios, the series delves into the challenges and triumphs faced by individuals and families dealing with dementia.

Season one focuses on the experiences of those diagnosed with dementia, exploring topics such as coping with the diagnosis, managing daily life, and maintaining relationships.

Season two, launched in May 2025, shifts the spotlight to caregivers, highlighting their emotional journeys and the complexities of supporting loved ones with dementia.

The podcast has resonated with many, amassing over 100,000 listens in less than a year. Listeners have praised its candid storytelling and the comfort it provides to those affected by dementia.

Among those interviewed in the new series is Jenny, who cared for her husband Noel through his experience with dementia. She said she hoped that sharing her story would help other carers feel less isolated and overwhelmed.

“Listening to other people’s experiences helped me at the time – people’s stories are always the ones that teach and inspire,” Jenny said.

“The podcast offers the opportunity to share stories on a deeper level. It’s more raw and real because it’s a more extensive conversation.”

Dementia Australia CEO, Professor Tanya Buchanan, said Hold the Moment was just one of the ways that the organisation provides support, information, and services for carers.

“We had an incredible response to the first season of our podcast, where we shared stories of people living with dementia, so we wanted to provide the same support for family carers,” she said.

“Carers are generally family members – partners, children or siblings – so while they see it as their role to care for their loved one, we also know it can be challenging.

“The overwhelming popularity of the first season was a clear message that people impacted by dementia valued hearing about real life stories and that the podcast was a valuable support as it is jam-packed with resources, valuable tips and advice.”

Hold the Moment is available on major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube. For additional support and resources, listeners can contact the National Dementia Helpline at 1800 100 500, which is available around the clock.
