Understanding registered supporters in aged care
Navigating aged care can feel overwhelming, but measures under the new Act aim to make the process more inclusive and empowering.

When the new Aged Care Act came into effect on 1 November 2025, one key initiative was the introduction of “registered supporters” to uphold the principles of supported decision-making.
A registered supporter is someone you choose to help you make and communicate decisions about your aged care services and needs.
Unlike substitute decision-makers, registered supporters do not make decisions on your behalf. Instead, they work with you, ensuring your preferences and values remain central to every choice.
This approach reflects a commitment to dignity, autonomy, and person-centred care.
What does a registered supporter do?
Registered supporters assist in practical ways, such as:
- Helping you understand information about aged care options
- Supporting you to express your wishes clearly
- Communicating your decisions to providers when needed.
Their role is grounded in respect for your independence. You remain the decision-maker, while they provide guidance and advocacy to ensure that your voice is heard.
To help older Australians and their supporters understand the recent changes, the Federal Government has released a suite of resources, including:
- A policy library outlining the principles and legal framework for registered supporters.
- A brochure offering a simple guide to what registered supporters do and how to appoint one.
- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) addressing common queries about rights, responsibilities, and processes.
- Videos explaining supported decision-making under the new Aged Care Act.
These resources aim to make the concept of registered supporters clear and accessible, ensuring individuals and families can confidently engage with the system.
Why it matters
Supported decision-making is about more than compliance; it’s about empowerment. By appointing a registered supporter, older Australians can maintain control over their care while receiving the assistance they need to navigate complex choices.
This initiative reflects a broader shift toward respect, transparency, and partnership in aged care.
