Why ANZAC Day is still important

The troops who fought at Gallipoli have long since passed away, but our connection with 25 April 1915 endures.

ANZAC Day holds a special place in the Australian story and it’s one that continues to resonate, even more than a century after the landing at Gallipoli.

While the original ANZACs have now passed into history, their memory has not faded. Instead, it has settled deeply into the national consciousness, shaping how we understand service, sacrifice, and the values we all share.

For many older Australians, ANZAC Day is both personal and profoundly communal. It is a day when memories surface, of loved ones who served, of stories handed down through families, and of a nation shaped by its responses to adversity.

Although the events at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 remain the symbolic heart of the commemoration, ANZAC Day encompasses the full sweep of Australia’s military history: the Western Front, Tobruk, Kokoda, Korea, Vietnam, many peacekeeping missions, and more recent conflicts.

Each generation of service men and women has inherited the legacy of the first ANZACs while adding their own chapters of courage and resilience.

As we gather at dawn services, watch parades, or simply pause in quiet reflection, we acknowledge not only those who never returned, but also those who came home carrying physical and emotional scars.

Their experiences remind us that war leaves its imprint across lifetimes, families, and communities. Recognition of this truth continues to deepen our respect for veterans and heighten our awareness of the human cost of conflict.

In an uncertain world, marked by geopolitical tension, emerging threats, and rapid global change, the lessons of ANZAC Day feel more relevant than ever.

The day encourages us to reflect not just on past battles, but on the values that saw Australians through them: mateship, perseverance, resilience, compassion, and unity.

These qualities are not relics of history; they are resources we draw on as a society navigating contemporary challenges.

ANZAC Day may also prompt reflection on continuity across generations. Many seniors grew up during the Second World War or when war memories were still fresh, when parents or grandparents spoke of rationing, loss, or reunion.

Today, we see younger Australians engaging with ANZAC traditions in their own ways, by attending dawn services in large numbers, researching family histories, and connecting to the spirit of remembrance with renewed curiosity.

This intergenerational engagement is a powerful reminder that the ANZAC legacy is not fading; it is evolving.

Ultimately, ANZAC Day is not only about remembering those who served, it is about reaffirming who we are. It asks us to honour the past while committing ourselves to a future shaped by courage, empathy, and shared purpose.
