Why Lydia loves our discounts app
Meet the woman who’s showing the way when it comes to getting the most out of NSA membership.

When it comes to getting value from her National Seniors Australia (NSA) membership, Lydia Schreiner really knows the ropes.
In fact, she has more than a thousand reasons to treasure her membership – thanks to her enthusiastic use of our EAT | PLAY | SAVE app.
That’s the amount of money we estimate she and her husband, Rob, have saved using the app, which is free to all NSA members and offers valuable discounts on shopping, fun experiences, and dining out around Australia.
“It more than covers what we’ve paid to be members,” she says, referring to the money they've saved in and around their hometown of Adelaide and on trips to other cities.
While she hasn’t kept an exact tally, Lydia agrees that her savings are well into the hundreds of dollars, mostly through dining discounts.
“There’s a couple of places that are nearby where we use it," she told us. “One of them is a place where we often have breakfast.”
Lydia finds that the app encourages her to go out more and says she’s “definitely recommended it to friends”.
Asked to share a secret with new users, she says, “Don’t press ‘redeem’ until you are about to hand it over”. This might cancel the discount for a day before it can be claimed again.
Luckily, in Lydia’s case, her favourite spots know her very well, and they are all set to deliver her the discount before she even tells them she’s going to use the app!
While the app is a major benefit of NSA membership, Lydia reckons she has had her money’s worth even without it.
She is a big fan of our Keep Cash campaign, agreeing that it’s important for people to be able to pay for goods and services by cash as well as by cards and digital means.
“I find a lot of the smaller businesses we use, they're quite happy to take it,” she says, noting that those businesses are happy to take notes and coins, and that cash payments avoid the extra fees that sometimes apply to card payments.
She also notes that cash can come in handy when the technology handling payments and other banking transactions fails.
“We've had situations where people have found that the system has broken down and they can't make their purchases because the place just isn't set up for cash anymore,” she says.
Lydia has also had a free phone appointment with NSA’s free Financial Advice Matters consultant, who helped her navigate her superannuation status on turning 65.
In fact, she’s so happy with her NSA membership that she’s advised her friends to join.
