Planning a road trip the right way isn’t as simple as getting in the car and driving. It pays to prepare for your trip by considering all important factors such as your vehicle condition, weather, travel route, and road rules for a safe and stress-free journey.

Here are five checks to make before heading off on the road.

Car safety check

There are some easy car checks you may be able to make yourself but before you head off, it pays to schedule a professional check-up of your vehicle. Ensure you get any concerns looked at, including strange noises, stiff steering that veers left or right, poor brakes, and warning lights.

  • Tyres: Check the rubber on your tyres for any bulges or tears, drive carefully, and avoid broken glass. Also, make sure the tread is still within the legal requirement and the air is topped up. If you plan to go off-road, ensure you have capable tyres. Pack chains if you're driving in the snow.

  • Basic maintenance: You or a professional mechanic may be able to top up the fuel, oil, brake fluid, and window-washing liquid. Make sure your brake pads are in good condition.

Weather and road conditions

Check traffic and road conditions before you head off because these can cause delays in your journey. Check out up-to-date and real-time navigation apps such as Google Maps and Apple Maps, and the real-time driving directions app Waze.

Consider how to navigate major road works or upgrades that could impact your route. You may want to work out an alternative route or detour options.

Weather can also affect your road trip. Keep an eye on weather reports as conditions can fluctuate. If possible, be flexible with your travel arrangements in case of severe weather warnings.

Road rules for interstate

Although most rules are the same across Australian states and territories, there are some that differ regarding things such as mobile phone use, passenger alcohol consumption, roundabouts, and U-turns. Make sure you’re familiar with the rules for the state/territory you’re heading to.

Insurance and roadside assistance

Did you know?

Only in Victoria can motorists make a U-turn at all intersections, including traffic lights, unless there are continuous lines or a “no U-turn" sign applies.

A U-turn is not permitted unless signed otherwise in New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia. The rules differ in the remaining states and territories.

Comprehensive car insurance can cover a wide range of damage caused to your vehicle including accidents, theft, fire, and storms – so you may want to check your insurance is up to date and comprehensive before you set off.

You may also want to consider getting roadside assistance, which can help you in the event you experience car trouble on the road. This usually includes assistance with roadside repairs and towing, emergency fuel, batteries and help with lost or locked keys.

Fuel and rest stops

Careful planning is the key to a safe and fulfilling road trip and can save you dollars in the fuel tank. Plan your routes and locations. Know what towns or cities you will be stopping at and what supplies you can get there, including fuel.

Shop around for the best fuel prices as this can add up to big savings. There are free apps like Petrol Spy, Fuel Map Australia and MotorMouth that can help you see prices at fuel retailers along the way, often displayed in real time.

If you are the driver, take frequent breaks (at least every two hours) and don’t drive for more than 8-10 hours a day. If you have a companion, take turns driving to give you both a chance for rest and recovery. These actions can be a lifesaver.

Being prepared for a road trip is just as important as the trip itself. Making these checks before you leave will not only keep you safer during a road trip, but you will also most likely be much more relaxed to enjoy your time on the road. This will allow you peace of mind and a great road travelling experience.
