Non-Executive Director - Government
We are seeking applications for the role of Non-Executive Director. As a member of the National Seniors Australia (NSA) Board, this role will provide support and guidance regarding the insurance arm of our business and its operations. The insurance activities of NSA financially support our operations as an independent advocacy organisation and allow us to maintain that independence from financial and political obligations.
The board meets 8 times a year. These meetings last for half a day, and there is the potential to take on a committee role such as Audit, Risk & Finance or Board Appointments & Remuneration. There is also a one to two-day strategy workshop each year. This is a paid appointment and travel expenses will be reimbursed for all face to face meetings.
Location:
Brisbane, but candidates can reside anywhere in Australia.
Required skills:
- A balance of proven expertise, diverse skills and experience from commercial insurance or insurance broking. A solid appreciation of corporate governance. Leadership skills, experience at the highest levels of decision-making and strategic thinking abilities.
- Awareness and familiarity of contemporary Australian Securities and Investment Commission and APRA requirements, general company standards.
- Knowledge of insurance products and services, reinsurance, an understanding of current issues within domestic and global reinsurance, a wide understanding of Australian business and a contemporary understanding of the economy.
- Proven operational experience at a senior level such as a General Manager or Chief Executive and preferably experience as a Non- Executive Director. The incumbent needs to have an understanding of the roles, duties and responsibilities of Directors under the Corporations Act.
- Knowledge of or experience in the commercial insurance or insurance broking industries and in particular reinsurance.
- Substantial management experience.
Required qualifications:
Bachelor of Commerce - Accounting or Insurance or MBA or equivalent.
Membership of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and successful completion of the Company Directors Course.

The board's principle role is the overall corporate governance of the company which includes:- Its strategic direction
- The use of effective financial and internal controls
- Establishing goals for management
- Monitoring the achievement of those goals with a view to optimising the company's performance and providing services to its members
- Determining company policies.
