History in the making

In the 1960s, I visited Sydney in the school holidays, staying with friends at Caringbah. Every visit, they always took me in to see the progress of the building of the Opera House (Winter 2022, Lifting the curtain on the Opera House’s past, page 10). Such memories of history—I follow its story over the years.

Outsmarting the scammers

New "Hi Mum" scam alert

Scamwatch is urging the public to be wary of phone messages from a purported family member or friend claiming they need help, following a significant rise in “Hi Mum” scams in recent months. Victims are contacted through messaging apps such as WhatsApp by a scammer posing as a family member or friend, claiming they have lost or damaged their phone and are making contact from a new number.

The scammer will then ask for personal information or money to help urgently pay a bill, contractor or replace the phone. If you receive a message like this, report it to Scamwatch.

I want to share my personal experience of recent scams (Winter 2022, Outsmarting the scammers, page 14). I am retired and was looking on one of the comparison sites for bonds. Later I got a call from a person claiming to be from ING. He was offering to send me Australian Government bond TB 136 and when he got my interest, talked about Yorkshire Building Society bond offering a coupon of 13%.

So, I asked him to send me an email. The email duly arrived as name.surname@ing-client.com. This raised my suspicion since a valid email would generally have name.surname@bank.com.au or name.surname@bank.com. I went to the ASIC website to confirm.

There was no product disclosure statement (PDS) but some details about the offerings. It became obvious this was a scam. The ASX had no record of the bond, although there were other numbers cited.

Later, I got another call from someone claiming to be from Standard Chartered Bank offering me another bond issued by them. The PDF was professionally done with the logo of Standard Chartered Bank on the cover but the rest had a black logo. The email address was also suspect. I checked the Standard Chartered Bank website, which clearly states they do not offer any retail products in Australia. I also contacted their risk officer, who confirmed this was indeed a scam.

So, the moral is, be extremely careful. Especially when one receives a cold call. Always check the email address. Do your own investigations.

This is fantastic advice, Mohan. Well done and thank you so much for sharing your experience with other members.

Spring in the 70s

Our first colour cover is this nostalgic 1974 archive shot, simply titled 'Young lass with spring wattle in Canberra'.

I merely want to thank the publishing team for the best magazine from you (under its various names) that I have read in perhaps 15 years!

Every article is relevant, informative, and well-written.

And thanks for giving Fitzy a voice as we celebrate 50 years of the Opera House (Winter 2022, Lifting the curtain on the Opera House’s past, page 10).

I will pass it on to others living near me and will be proud to do so. Thank you again and congratulations.

Honey Jumble love

We had an overwhelming response to our Honey Jumble recipe (Winter 2022, page 44) via the National Seniors Facebook page. Here are some of the comments received.

We used to make these for our cafe in Queensland. People loved them. Very time consuming to make but worth the feedback and better than bought ones in the pack. Always brought them for my daughter’s birthday parties.

– Annie M

Used the recipe exactly, except replaced the orange with passion fruit for the icing. I doubled the recipe but used the icing quantity suggested and it was more than enough. Very yummy.

– Karen S

Gosh I’ve missed them! Honey jumbles always in my nanna’s pantry!

– Shelly L

My mum used to make them and I made them for my kids. Haven’t made them for years. Lovely memories.

– Mary D

I love making these and they are always so well received!
