Fighting back against antibiotic resistance

Drugs we use against disease-causing bacteria are losing effectiveness. The race is on to find solutions.

Antibiotic resistance has emerged as one of the most pressing global health challenges of the 21st century.

As bacteria evolve to withstand the drugs designed to kill them, once‑treatable infections become increasingly difficult or even impossible to cure.

The World Health Organization warns that resistance is rising annually, leaving millions of people vulnerable worldwide.

The good news is that Australian research is at the forefront of efforts to combat this escalating crisis.

A recent SBS News report highlights the work of Perth‑based scientist Dr Maud Eijkenboom, whose personal experience with her son's antibiotic‑resistant infection motivated her to establish Lixa, a biotechnology company exploring unconventional methods to restore the effectiveness of existing antibiotics.

Instead of focusing solely on discovering new drugs – a race that scientists are struggling to win – her team investigates ways to make outdated antibiotics work again by targeting the mechanisms that allow bacteria to resist treatment.

This research has gained international attention for its potential to save lives.

Other research into antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is reinforcing these efforts.

The CSIRO’s AMR Lens Report emphasises that antimicrobial resistance already causes millions of deaths annually and threatens global food security, economies, and healthcare systems.

It calls for urgent, cross‑sector innovation to address gaps in stewardship, surveillance, and drug development. The report warns that without decisive action, AMR‑related deaths could rise by 70% by 2050.

Part of the response involves developing new, more effective antibiotics.

Researchers at The University of Queensland recently led the first international randomised controlled trial of cefiderocol, a novel antibiotic designed to treat life‑threatening, drug‑resistant infections.

The trial found the medication to be safe and effective, marking an important milestone in global clinical efforts to counter resistant bacteria.

However, researchers caution that even advanced drugs will require careful monitoring as resistance continues to evolve.

A report released by the Australian Centre for Disease Control shows rising resistance rates despite improvements in overall antibiotic use.

It underscores the need for evidence‑based prescribing, infection prevention strategies, and stewardship programs across hospitals, aged‑care facilities, and community settings.

Together, these initiatives – innovative biotechnology, new antibiotic development, strengthened surveillance, and improved public health stewardship – form a multipronged response to one of the world’s most urgent health threats.

While the battle is far from over, researchers and health professionals are driving progress in ensuring antibiotics continue to work today and remain effective for future generations.
