Fun things to do

The Queensland Government has created a website that all Australians can use to help them celebrate Grandparents’ Day.

There are suggestions about how families can spend the day together – reading, cooking, researching family hisotry, or just having a yarn – and intervactive features including an activity sheet and free e-cards.

Details are at here.

This Grandparents’ Day, 26 October, we will be celebrating you – the heart of families, the keepers of stories, and the guiding lights in our communities.

It’s more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a moment to honour the wisdom, warmth, and life experience that older Australians bring to every generation.

Whether you’re a grandparent, great-grandparent, or a senior who’s played a special role in someone’s life, this day is for you.

At National Seniors Australia (NSA), we believe that Experience Matters – not just in the past, but right now, and in shaping the future. Your lived experience is a treasure that enriches families, strengthens communities, and helps build a better Australia.

You are the quiet achievers who anchor families with love and stability. You pass down traditions, share stories that span decades, and offer insights that no textbook or website can match. You’ve seen change, adapted to it, and helped others do the same.

But your impact goes far beyond the family home. Across the country, older Australians are volunteering, mentoring, and leading in civic life. You are the backbone of community organisations, the trusted voices in times of uncertainty, and the role models younger generations look up to.

Grandparents’ Day is also a reminder of the power of connection between generations. When young people spend time with older role models, they gain empathy, understanding, and resilience. And for many seniors, these relationships bring renewed joy and purpose.

Whether it’s a school assembly, a community gathering, or a quiet chat over a cuppa, Grandparents’ Day is a chance to say thank you — for your love, your lessons, and your legacy.

As Australia’s population ages, it’s more important than ever to recognise the value of older Australians. At NSA, we advocate every day for a society that respects and celebrates your experience.

So, this Grandparents’ Day, we invite you to reflect on your journey, share your stories, and take pride in the role you continue to play. Because your experience truly matters. And it always will.
