A pause to celebrate medical science
Seniors have witnessed remarkable achievements in public health. Research will ensure more breakthroughs.

World Health Day, observed each year on 7 April, serves as a moment for us to reflect on the state of global health and the progress still needed to improve the wellbeing of people everywhere.
The date marks the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948, and it serves as a reminder of how far modern medicine and public health have come over the past seven decades.
Many of us grew up in a world with far more limited medical knowledge, fewer scientific tools, and less research.
In Australia, thanks to scientific advances, we have seen the elimination of once-widespread diseases, and a steady improvement in life expectancy and quality of life into old age.
For 2026, WHO has chosen the theme “Together for health. Stand with science”, which is both a recognition of the contribution of medical science and a call to action to ensure we don’t lose the advances made over many years.
It’s worth remembering that diseases such as polio, smallpox, and tuberculosis were once part of everyday life for many Australians.
In the mid-20th Century, Medical treatments were often basic, and information about health risks was much harder to access.
Over time, scientific breakthroughs such as antibiotics, vaccines, diagnostic technologies, and improved hospital care have dramatically reshaped health outcomes.
For Australians who witnessed these transformations first-hand, the call to “stand with science” is not an abstract concept, it’s a reflection of lived experience.
The theme acknowledges that the role of science is critical in an era when misinformation can move faster than facts and when global health challenges require coordinated responses.
The need for trustworthy, evidence‑based decision‑making has never been greater.
Those of us who remember the roll‑out of vaccines that eliminated childhood diseases, or who recall the public health campaigns that improved sanitation, road safety, and cancer screening rates, understand the difference that reliable science can make in everyday life.
The 2026 World Health Day message emphasises togetherness, underscoring the reality that no country, community, or individual can navigate modern health challenges alone.
For many older Australians, science is not simply a concept but a companion that has been present throughout their lives: in the vaccines they received as children, in the medical tests they undergo, and in the surgeries and treatments that did not exist for earlier generations.
We have watched as public health campaigns helped reduce smoking rates, as seatbelts and airbags lowered road fatalities, and as medical research improved survival for conditions such as heart disease and cancer.
Science has been both a guardian and a guide. It is not always perfect, but its successes outweigh its shortcomings. Scientific rigour and global information sharing ensure that the lessons learnt from failures contribute to future successes.
Achievements in medical science cross borders and bring people together in the quest to create a better, healthier world.
World Health Day 2026 invites us to recognise past achievements and look forward with the same spirit of cooperation that has driven so much progress in medical science.
It encourages communities to value the expertise that underpins modern medicine, to trust in the evidence that shapes public health advice, and to work collectively to ensure that everyone can benefit from scientific advancements.
At a time when health challenges remain complex and global, standing with science may be the most powerful step we can take toward a healthier future.
