It's not too late for winter vaccinations

Bird flu warning

A highly infectious strain of avian influenza, or bird flu, has been detected in some bird species in Australia, raising concerns about native wildlife and putting the poultry industry on alert.

At the time of writing, Australian Health officials have determined the risk to humans as low, noting that spread of bird flu from person-to-person is very rare.

A person with bird flu was reported in Australia in 2024. That person, who was infected overseas, was managed in hospital and recovered. The virus did not spread to anyone else.

The Australian Centre for Disease Control has information about the June 2026 outbreak here.

Australia’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Michael Kidd AO, has called on older Australians who have not yet had their winter vaccinations to make the appointment and get protected.

“Vaccinations save lives and are important for older Australians in order to help keep people well and to prevent serious illness related to common respiratory illnesses,” said Professor Kidd.

People aged 65 years and over have a higher risk of severe illness and hospitalisation from flu, COVID‑19 and RSV, which is why it’s important to stay up to date with recommended vaccinations.

The National Immunisation Program (NIP) provides free vaccines for eligible people, including older adults. People who hold or are eligible for a Medicare card can access these free vaccines through participating health services.

The NIP offers:

  • Free flu vaccines for everyone aged 65 and over and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months and over.

  • Free RSV vaccines for people aged 75 years and over, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 years and over.

The COVID-19 vaccine is free for adults in Australia, regardless of Medicare or visa status.

When to get vaccinated

Peak winter virus season is usually June to September. It’s best to get vaccinated each year when the vaccines become available to be protected before peak season – but it’s never too late to get vaccinated.

Influenza viruses and vaccines change every year, which is why annual vaccination is recommended.

COVID-19 vaccinations are recommended every 12 months for people aged 65 to 74, and every six months for people aged 75 and over.

Currently, a single dose of RSV vaccine is recommended. Protection is expected to last for at least two years.

You can safely get your flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccines separately or at the same appointment, saving the need to book multiple appointments.

Speak with your doctor about what is recommended for you.

Where to get vaccinated

You can get free winter vaccinations from a range of vaccination providers across Australia, such as GPs, participating pharmacies, local council immunisation clinics, community health centres, and Aboriginal medical services.
