Can it really be a quarter-century since The Dish turned the story of the Parkes radio telescope and the Apollo 11 moon landing into a popular movie, reminding audiences how that historic moment was broadcast to the world via rural Australia?
Science fiction movies and streaming series, hit songs, and documentaries have kept the universe visually present, even as special effects and artificial intelligence make the unimaginable feel familiar.
At ground level, access has never been easier. Affordable telescopes and binoculars are widely available, and phone apps can identify planets and constellations in seconds.
Planetariums in our major cities, and under the pitch-dark skies of Charleville in outback Queensland, offer immersive introductions to astronomy, especially tailored to southern-hemisphere viewing.
That perspective matters, because much of what people read or hear about the sky is produced for people living north of the Equator.
At this point, it’s worth drawing a firm line between astronomy and astrology. The two fields have been distinct for centuries.
Astronomy is a science grounded in observation and measurement; astrology is a belief system that assigns meaning to celestial positions.
But science, too, can add to our understanding of ourselves. In a noisy world, stepping outside and looking towards the stars can offer us clarity and humility about our real place in the universe.
