If you’ve ever been captivated by the mysteries of the pyramids, intrigued by ancient rituals, or fascinated by the lives of people who walked the Earth thousands of years ago, Discovering Ancient Egypt is an exhibition not to be missed.

Now showing at Queensland Museum Kurilpa in Brisbane until 17 August 2025, this world-class exhibition offers an enthralling look into the lives, beliefs, and legacies of one of the most enduring civilisations in human history.

With more than 250 extraordinary objects on loan from the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities (Rijksmuseum van Oudheden), visitors can step into the rich world of ancient Egypt, from the sacred to the everyday.

Looking for a cultural day out? You will find plenty to enjoy in this remarkable exhibition. Take your time exploring fascinating relics spanning over 3,000 years – from intricately painted coffins and finely crafted jewellery to private letters, pottery, and even an ancient board game.

A highlight of the experience is the life-sized recreation of the Temple of Taffeh, brought to life with stunning 3D light projections and large-scale visuals. Originally built in the first century CE during the Roman occupation of Egypt, this awe-inspiring structure is the perfect gateway to the rest of the exhibition.

To enhance your experience, take advantage of the 90-minute self-guided audio tour, accessible directly from your own mobile device.

Whether you prefer to explore at your own pace or dive deeper into particular artefacts, the tour brings the exhibition to life with rich storytelling and expert insights. Don’t forget your headphones!

As you explore, you’ll learn about the Egyptian belief in the afterlife and the rituals designed to ensure a safe passage beyond.

Marvel at a page from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, see the outer coffin of the priest Panesy adorned with protective symbols, and admire a necklace featuring a ram’s head — a powerful symbol of the god Amun. These treasures offer a glimpse not only into spiritual life, but also into the artistry and ingenuity of the ancient world.

Whether you’re a lifelong history buff or simply curious to learn something new, Discovering Ancient Egypt promises a memorable, enriching experience – one that proves you're never too old to discover something extraordinary.
