Transport concessions keep seniors moving

Many older Australians, especially those in or near capital cities, can access free or very cheap travel.

Across Australia, seniors are the beneficiaries of free or very low-cost public transport. These initiatives help older people go about their everyday lives, and travel to places they might not otherwise be able to visit.

However, the benefits are not uniform between the states, and they are subject to change.

The Tasmanian Government has just extended a trial of free public transport for all passengers until 30 June 2027. It applies to services operated by Metro Tasmania, Tassielink Transit, Kinetic, Manions Coaches, Calows Coaches, Area Connect, and Derwent Ferries.

The ABC reported that the move followed a successful trial, with Metro bus patronage up about 37% and Kinetic services up about 46%.

Queensland has taken a different approach. Rather than making all travel free, it has introduced a 50-cent flat fare across the Translink network, including buses, trains, ferries, and trams, although the Airtrain service is excluded.

Seniors in the capital can also travel free during off-peak periods on Brisbane City Council buses, CityCats, and ferries by using a Senior go card or Seniors Card +go. Council buses are also free for seniors all day on weekends and public holidays.

South Australian Seniors Card holders can travel free on Adelaide Metro buses, trains, and trams all day, every day. In Perth, WA Seniors SmartRider holders travel free in off-peak periods, with concession fares at other times.

In Canberra, seniors aged 60 to 69 receive free off-peak travel, while those aged 70 and over travel free at all times.

In New South Wales, seniors do not travel free as a general rule, but eligible Seniors Card holders can apply for a Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card, which allows unlimited travel for $2.50 a day on metro, train, bus, ferry and light rail services across the Opal network, which covers Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, the Hunter, the Illawarra, and the Southern Highlands.

In Victoria, Seniors Card holders receive a 50% discount on weekday public transport fares and can travel free on weekends across the whole state.

In the Northern Territory, public bus travel is currently free for all passengers in the greater Darwin area and in Alice Springs, but this may change in January 2027 when a new ticketing system is introduced.

Around the world, several cities and countries have adopted the idea of free travel for everyone.

In 2020, Luxembourg became the first nation to make almost all public transport free. Residents and visitors can travel on buses, trams, and most trains without buying a ticket.

In France, the city of Montpellier allows residents to travel free on buses and trams. Early results suggest increased public transport use, reduced car travel, and greater participation in community life, particularly among people on lower incomes and seniors.

While debates continue about the cost of these programs, supporters argue that affordable transport delivers social benefits that are hard to measure in dollars alone.

For seniors, easier access to shops, medical appointments, social activities, and family visits can help combat isolation and support healthy, active ageing.
