How the Simpsons stays fresh
Its main stars range in age from early 62 to 82, but the characters remain the same as they were 36 years ago.

Who do you remember?
Many senior Australians will remember the first “prime time” television cartoon, The Flintstones, which debuted here in 1961.
You may also recall the live-action series, The Honeymooners, which inspired it.
Other animated series aimed at adult or intergenerational audiences that began before 2000 include Wait Till Your Father Gets Home, South Park, Family Guy, Futurama, and King of the Hill.
Do you have a favourite cartoon from back in the day that you still watch, or would like to see remade?
When The Simpsons burst onto television screens in 1989 in the United States, and two years later in Australia, it was something entirely new: cheeky, clever, and just a little bit rebellious.
Four decades later, Homer’s unmistakable “D’oh!” still rings out across living rooms worldwide, proving that good storytelling and memorable characters never go out of style.
One of the show’s most delightful quirks is that its characters never age. Bart is perpetually 10, Lisa forever 8, and Homer and Marge remain in their thirties.
Yet behind those familiar animated faces are performers and creatives who have grown older alongside their audience, adding a layer of meaning to the show’s longevity.
Today, many of the original voice cast are approaching, or have already passed, retirement age.
Harry Shearer, the voice of Mr Burns, Ned Flanders, and many others, is now 82. Julie Kavner (Marge) is 75, Dan Castellaneta (Homer) and Nancy Cartwright (Bart) are both 68, and Hank Azaria (who voices a host of characters including Moe) and Yeardley Smth (Lisa) are 62.
Remarkably, they continue to voice characters decades younger than themselves, bringing both energy and emotional nuance that feels fresh.
It is a rare professional journey. Few actors begin a role in their 30s or 40s and are still performing it well into their 70s or 80s.
While technology has evolved dramatically since the series began, and technology could be used to replace the cast or augment their work, the human element remains central.
As Azaria has noted, “AI can make the sound… but it will still need people to make the performance.”
Behind the scenes, that same sense of continuity exists among writers, producers, and animators, many of whom have devoted large portions of their working lives to the world of The Simpsons.
Together, they’ve created not just a television show, but a shared cultural touchstone that spans generations.
The series is still in production – it recently passed the remarkable milestone of 800 episodes – and is preparing to return to cinemas. A long‑awaited sequel to the 2007 film has been officially announced and is expected to arrive in September 2027, just over 20 years after the original.
Series creator Matt Groening has summed up the show’s extraordinary staying power, joking there’s “no end in sight” and that the team will keep going “until somebody dies”.
While said in jest, it reflects a deeper truth: The Simpsons has become more than a television program; it’s an institution.
While the characters never age, the plots and cultural references are always up to date. Yet, while everything around them changes, the heart of the show remains the same.
For those of us who have grown older alongside it, there’s something comforting about that.
