Paul McCartney: Now he’s 84

The years have not diminished the talent or sense of humour of the world’s most famous living songwriter.

Octogenarian sets stage record

John Lithgow has set a remarkable Broadway milestone, becoming the oldest male actor to win a competitive Tony Award at age 80.

His 2026 victory for Giant not only secured him a place in theatre history but also highlighted his enduring talent across decades. Lithgow’s achievement broke the previous record held by Roy Dotrice, who won at 77.

Even more striking is the 53-year gap between Lithgow’s first Tony in 1973 and this latest win, the longest interval ever recorded.

Lithgow also remains active in film and television and will star as Professor Dumbledore in the new HBO Harry Potter series.

When The Beatles released When I’m Sixty-Four in 1967, it was a whimsical look at growing older, full of humour and warmth.

Now, as Sir McCartney celebrates his 84th birthday this week on 18 June, that playful question feels more resonant. Twenty years after he turned 64, he is as creative and curious as ever.

Born in Liverpool in 1942, McCarney grew up in modest circumstances, shaped by a love of music passed down from his father. His early partnership with John Lennon became one of the most celebrated songwriting collaborations in history.

Before fame fully took hold, the Beatles honed their craft in the lively clubs of Hamburg, Germany. Long nights, rough crowds, and a relentless performance schedule forged their unique sound and stage presence.

By the early 1960s, Beatlemania had taken Britain by storm, soon sweeping across the Atlantic as the band led the so-called “British Invasion” of the United States.

Their impact was global, including an unforgettable tour of Australia, where crowds greeted them with extraordinary enthusiasm. Those concerts remain cherished memories for many fans who witnessed what was truly a cultural turning point.

The late 1960s saw the Beatles push musical boundaries, experimenting boldly in studio recordings while embracing new lifestyles that reflected the spirit of the era.

Albums such as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road redefined popular music, showing that rock songs could be art.

Yet with innovation came tension. The band’s eventual split in 1970 was painful for fans and members alike, marking the end of a remarkable chapter. The world was later shaken again by the tragic death of John Lennon in 1980.

Through all this, McCartney’s creative energy has never faded. Decades after the Beatles split, he continues to write, record, and perform.

His recent “comeback” album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, and live performances remind audiences that passion has no expiry date.

In the past few months, he appeared on the season finale of Saturday Night Live and was the final guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The latter saw him revisit the stage of New York’s Ed Sullivan Theatre, where the Beatles first won over American audiences in 1964.

Ever one to embrace new media, McCartney also recently recorded interviews with young influencer Amelia Dimoldenberg on her Chicken Shop Date program and with Tom Holland on the hit podcast, The Rest is History.

With fellow surviving Beatle, Ringo Starr, McCartney stands as a beloved figure for many seniors who grew up with their music.

Yet their influence stretches far beyond nostalgia. They represent resilience, adaptability, and a lifelong commitment to creativity. They remind us that ageing is not about withdrawing, but about continuing to explore, create and connect.

For those of us who have followed McCartney’s journey from Liverpool lad to global icon, his story is deeply personal. His songs have marked our milestones, comforted us in difficult times, and brought joy across generations.

And as he turns 84, still performing and still writing, he offers a powerful message: growing older is not the end of the story, it’s just another verse in the song of life.

If you’re a McCartney fan, who may want to join World Beatles Day celebrations on 25 June.
