A year of advocacy and achievement

As the festive season approaches, National Seniors Australia (NSA) is celebrating a year marked by progress and optimism.

From major advocacy wins to groundbreaking research and campaigns, NSA has continued to champion the interests of older Australians – as it has done since 1975.

NSA has been particularly active in the area of age care, through our longstanding advocacy in the lead-up to the new Aged Care Act that came into effect this year, along with a commitment to push for further improvements in the system to support older Australians.

Through our advocacy in Canberra and at grassroots level, we have also continued to further the case of Australians who want to Keep Cash as a valid means of payment, and we have offered practical support for seniors who want to Keep Scam SAFE online.

The Federal Government adopted three out of four NSA policy recommendations, including a modest lift in deeming rates timed with pension indexation and positive changes to superannuation policy, such as indexing tax thresholds and removing tax on unrealised gains.

These wins underscore NSA’s effectiveness in influencing policy for a fairer retirement system.

In October, NSA launched the #enough campaign, a bold initiative to challenge ageist stereotypes and restore respect and aspiration for older Australians. The campaign has resonated nationwide, reinforcing our commitment to changing the narrative around ageing.

Research also took centre stage with the release of the What Makes Older Australians Happy? report.

A survey of more than 2,500 participants revealed that while financial security and good health matter, happiness is equally tied to social connections, inner peace, and active engagement in society.

NSA showcased these insights in a lively media launch, proving that older Australians are diverse, vibrant, and far from stereotypical.

NSA CEO, Chris Grice, expressed his gratitude to members in a special festive video:

“Your contributions helped achieve successes in some areas and make significant progress in others. As we look towards 2026 – NSA’s 50th anniversary – I am energised by the prospects ahead and confident we will continue to bring about meaningful change together.”

NSA is preparing for a landmark year with celebrations, new partnerships, and other initiatives that honour our five decades of advocacy and community impact. We will also recommit to continue giving seniors a voice well into the future.

We will also host the Everald Compton Community Champion Medal, rewarding the unsung heroes in our midst.

From all of us at NSA, thank you for your support throughout 2025. Have a very merry and safe Christmas, however you celebrate, and may the coming year be filled with peace, joy, and time to do the things you love.
