Why you should think about your health before you go on the trip of a lifetime.
Planning a holiday is exciting, whether it’s visiting family overseas or ticking an item off your bucket list.
For seniors, a little extra preparation can make all the difference – especially when it comes to your health.
Travel medicine is about staying well before, during, and after your trip. And it starts with a visit to your doctor.
At least six weeks before departure, book a check‑up with your GP. This gives you time to discuss your destination, travel activities, and existing medical conditions.
Your doctor can advise whether you are fit to travel and help you manage issues such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, or respiratory conditions. It’s also the perfect time to review your regular medications and check whether any changes will be needed while you’re away.
Depending on where you are travelling, you may need vaccinations or preventive medications. Some countries require proof of certain vaccinations, such as yellow fever. Others may expose travellers to illnesses such as influenza, hepatitis, typhoid, or malaria.
Your doctor can explain what’s recommended or required and help you stay protected.
Be prepared
Always pack more medication than you need, in case of delays or unexpected illness. Keep medicines in their original packaging and carry them in your hand luggage.
Importantly, bring a letter or prescription from your doctor confirming that the medications are prescribed for you. Some medicines that are common in Australia may be restricted or unavailable overseas, so having documentation can prevent problems at borders or pharmacies.
It’s also wise to carry a list of your medications, dosages, and medical conditions, as well as emergency contact details.
Medical care overseas can be very expensive, and Medicare usually does not cover treatment outside Australia.
It’s important to review what your insurance provides, and worth considering the policy if it includes things like: pre‑existing medical conditions^ and emergency situations, including hospital^ care, medical evacuation^ and, in the worst‑case scenario, repatriation^ if you become seriously ill or pass away overseas.
Read the policy carefully and carry a copy with you. Share the details with a trusted family member so help is easily available if needed.
Taking time to prepare your health before travelling helps ensure your trip is enjoyable and stress‑free. A little planning now can help you focus on what matters most: making memories and enjoying the adventure.
