by Danielle de Valera

86-year-old local author, Danielle de Valera’s new novel called Counterculture Blues: a fable was recently described on the US review site Midwest Review as “whimsical and compelling”. This all-animal book is something of a change for Danielle, whose coming-of-age novel Those Brisbane Romantics was listed by prestigious US reviewer Kirkus Reviews in their 100 Best Books of 2022.

Counterculture Blues: a fable is a feel-good book about city cats who move to the country to escape city life – their trials and tribulations and eventual triumph.

“It’s interesting,” Danielle says. “Although I wrote the novel for adults, it’s turned out to be one of those rare books that’s suitable for all ages. I think it must be because Claude is on the cover. Everyone seems to have a different take on just what Claude is smoking,” she laughs. “But actually, it’s just a rollie.”

The novel is available online at https://shorturl.at/90MkM and https://books2read.com/u/38lQvV while print copies are available at New Farm Editions, Merthyr Village and Avid Reader, West End.
