As another new year rolls around, I can’t help but think about family and the changes that come with time. At 82, I've come to appreciate life’s simple pleasures and I'm excited to share with you a gift I gave my children and, I suppose, myself as well.

My grown children, now with families of their own, have always looked to me for support. However, as age catches up with me, I notice their growing concern for my welfare.

Living alone has its perks, but it also brings worry for those who care about you. My children worried about the possibility of me falling and not being able to call for help. They imagined scenarios where I might be stuck on the floor, helpless, and alone. It's a legitimate concern, fuelled by love and the instinct to protect those we cherish.

In response to their worries, my children introduced me to a technological solution — the TEQ-Secure mobile safety alarm. Worn around my neck like a pendant, it calls them if I have a fall or I’m in need of help.

It is not something that I feel quite ready for (or old enough) to wear.

However, I decided to alleviate their concerns by giving us all the gift of peace of mind — in the form of a TEQ-Secure.

Whilst I’m still not sure I really need one just yet, I do acknowledge that this gadget allows me to maintain my independence while offering my children the reassurance they need.

It’s a testament to the advancements in technology and how it can positively impact our lives, especially as we navigate the challenges of ageing.

I have to say, I enjoyed seeing the surprise (and perhaps relief) on their faces when they saw it.

The mobile safety pendant reflects the changing landscape of ageing, shifting from traditional notions of dependence to a more empowered and connected experience for us as we age. With this device, I’ve not only ensured my safety but also given my children the gift of reassurance. Now, they can relax knowing I’m never truly alone, and help is always within reach.

I find comfort in knowing I’ve given my children a gift far more valuable than material possessions — the gift of peace of mind. And in doing so, I’m reminded that the essence of the holiday season lies in the bonds we share and the simple gestures that bridge generations with love and understanding. Elsie
