No visit to Japan is complete without experiencing a traditional tea ceremony, or sado

This ritual is not just about drinking tea; it’s a spiritual practice that embodies harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.

The former capital of Kyoto, with its historic temples and gardens, is the perfect backdrop for this ancient practice, which was refined here.

In a typical tea house, you will see the meticulous preparation and presentation of matcha (powdered green tea), performed by a kimono-clad tea master.

The ceremony’s slow, deliberate pace encourages mindfulness and provides a deep appreciation for the simplicity and beauty of Japanese culture.

Geisha and samurai culture

To truly understand Japan’s historical depth, and its connections to today, exploring the world of geisha and samurai is essential.

In Kyoto’s Gion district, you can walk through narrow streets lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, where geisha, known locally as geiko, and their apprentices maiko, still entertain guests with classical music, dance, and games.

For a glimpse into the samurai way of life, head to Kanazawa, where you can visit ancient residences and the impressive Kanazawa Castle.

Many museums across Japan have exhibits on samurai armour and weaponry, highlighting the discipline and sense of honour that defined these legendary warriors.

Creating okonomiyaki

Cooking classes are a delightful way to connect with Japanese culture, and learning to make okonomiyaki is a particularly fun and interactive experience.

Described as a savoury pancake, okonomiyaki is made with ingredients such as cabbage, meat, and seafood, topped with tangy sauce, mayonnaise, and bonito flakes.

Classes, especially in Osaka where this dish is a local specialty, guide you through the process from preparing the batter to cooking and flipping the pancake on a hot griddle.

This hands-on activity not only teaches you a delicious recipe but also offers insight into Japanese dining etiquette and local flavours.

Osaka by foot

Osaka’s Dotonbori district is a vibrant hub of entertainment, food, and nightlife. A walking tour of this lively area will immerse you in its energetic atmosphere, illuminated by neon lights and giant mechanical signs.

Stroll along the canal, sample street food such as takoyaki (octopus balls) and kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) and visit iconic landmarks such as the Glico Running Man sign.

The district’s blend of old and new, traditional izakayas (pubs) and modern eateries showcases the dynamic spirit of Osaka, often referred to as the “Kitchen of Japan”.

Bamboo forest

For a serene escape from the urban hustle, the Bamboo Forest in Arashiyama, Kyoto, offers a breathtaking natural retreat.

Walking through this towering grove of bamboo stalks, you’ll be enveloped in a soothing green light and the gentle rustling of leaves.

The forest’s ethereal beauty is complemented by nearby attractions such as the Tenryu-ji Temple and the picturesque Togetsukyo Bridge.

Visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon ensures a more peaceful experience, allowing you to fully absorb the forest’s tranquil ambiance.

As amazing as all this seems, it’s just scratching the surface of this fascinating destination. There’s the iconic Mt Fuji, Hiroshima and its moving reminders of the atomic bomb, and the recent cultural traditions that gave rise to manga and anime.

Japan’s diverse experiences cater to all kinds of travellers, whether you’re drawn to its rich history, culinary delights, or natural wonders.

From the meditative practice of a tea ceremony to the bustling streets of Dotonbori, each activity provides a deeper understanding of Japan’s unique blend of tradition and innovation.

Embark on this journey and let Japan’s captivating culture and scenic beauty leave an indelible mark on your heart.
