Are you prepared for storm season?
Take these steps to ensure your property is protected in the case of natural disaster.

As storm season approaches across many parts of Australia, it’s a timely reminder to think about how well your home is prepared for severe weather.
High winds, heavy rain, hail, and flash flooding can all cause significant damage, particularly to older homes. Taking practical steps now can help reduce damage and ensure your insurance works as expected if the unexpected occurs.
Regular home maintenance is one of the most effective ways to protect your property during storms. Clear gutters, downpipes, and drains so water can flow away from the house, reducing the risk of overflow and water damage.
Loose roofing materials, cracked tiles, and rusted fastenings should be repaired, as strong winds can easily turn small problems into major damage.
Trimming overhanging branches, securing outdoor furniture, and checking fences can also reduce the risk of debris causing harm to your home or neighbouring properties.
Windows and doors are another common entry point for storm damage. Ensure seals are intact and frames are in good condition to help prevent water intrusion. If you live in a storm‑prone or coastal area, consider whether shutters or storm‑rated fittings might offer additional protection.
While preparation can reduce risk, it cannot eliminate it entirely. This is where adequate insurance becomes critical.
Home insurance should cover the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home after insured events such as storms, hail, or flooding (if included). Contents insurance protects your belongings, including furniture, appliances, clothing, and personal items, from damage or loss.
A common issue for homeowners is underinsurance. Rising construction costs mean that the amount it would take to rebuild your home may be much higher than it was several years ago.
Insurance should be based on rebuilding costs, not the market value of your home. Contents too are often undervalued, particularly when replacing items with new equivalents rather than their original purchase price.
Storm season is also a good time to review what your policy actually covers. Some policies exclude certain weather-related events or limit claims unless optional extras are included.
It’s important for you to understand any excesses, exclusions, and conditions, including whether temporary accommodation is covered if your home becomes unliveable.
Preparing your home and reviewing your insurance before storm season begins can save stress, time, and money.
While you can’t control the weather, you can take steps to protect your home, your finances and your peace of mind.
