Can you make money online?

Digital businesses may be a viable option for some seniors seeking extra income – but tread very carefully.

What do you think of when you hear the term “influencer”?

If you’ve heard the word at all, you may be imagining a photogenic young person with a presence on Instagram and TikTok, getting paid to promote beauty or fashion products.

Perhaps you’ve even heard of “Mr Beast”, the YouTube sensation who has made millions of dollars through his videos and related businesses.

Well, the first thing you need to know about these people is that they are the exception rather than the rule.

It is possible to make money online – you don’t even need to be young and photogenic – but it takes hard work, a full understanding of the space you are working in, and quite a lot of luck.

The upside is that, when it comes to funding, the entry level is very low. You probably already have the tools you need – a relatively new smartphone and an internet connection.

At this point, it’s important to point out that, as with any other business, you should proceed with caution and seek professional advice before committing any of your money.

And, as with anything involving an internet connection, be scam aware.

How people are making money online

  • Influencer marketing is one of the most popular ways to earn money online. Influencers, who are individuals with a substantial following on social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube, partner with brands to promote products or services. These partnerships can be lucrative, with influencers earning money through sponsored posts, product placements, and affiliate marketing. The term “influencer” is often associated with younger people, but there is a growing niche for senior influencers who can connect with audiences.

  • Content creation extends beyond social media influencers. Many people make money through blogging, podcasting, or creating videos for platforms like YouTube. These content creators monetise their work through ad revenue, sponsorships, and even direct fan support via platforms such as Patreon. If you have expertise in specific areas, whether it’s gardening, cooking, or finance, you may be able to find an audience eager to learn from their experience.

  • E-commerce and dropshipping involves selling products online through e-commerce platforms like eBay, Etsy, or Shopify. Some people create their own products, such as craftworks, while others engage in dropshipping, where they sell products that are actually supplied and sent to the customer by a third party. The danger with dropshipping is that you take responsibility for somebody else fulfilling the order. If they don’t deliver, or delay delivery, you’ll have an unhappy customer, and you could end up out of pocket.

  • Freelancing and remote work. The “gig economy” has exploded, with freelancing platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer offering opportunities for people to sell their skills online. Whether it’s writing, graphic design, virtual assistance, or consulting, older Australians with professional experience may be able to find work that fits their expertise. Remote work opportunities have also increased, with many companies now offering flexible work-from-home arrangements.

  • Online courses and coaching. If you have expertise in a particular field, creating and selling online courses can be a lucrative option. Several platforms, including Coursera and Udemy, help you to create courses on virtually any subject. Again, proceed with caution.

Is it viable for seniors?

While making money online is certainly possible for older Australians, there are several factors to consider:

  • Technological proficiency. A basic understanding of technology and social media is essential for most online money-making ventures.

  • Niche opportunities. Seniors often have a wealth of experience and knowledge in areas that may be niche but valuable – for example, financial advice for retirees, gardening tips, or cooking traditional recipes. The key is to identify a niche where your experience can meet an existing demand.

  • Time and commitment. While making money online can be profitable, it often requires a significant time investment, especially in the beginning. Building a following as an influencer or content creator, setting up an online store, or developing an online course all take time and effort. However, once established, these ventures can offer flexible work that fits around other commitments.

There’s a growing appreciation for age diversity online. Many brands and audiences are looking for authentic voices that represent different life stages.

Older content creators can connect with audiences in ways that younger creators might not be able to, particularly when it comes to addressing life experiences such as retirement, health, or family dynamics.

With the right approach, it is possible to make money online, but it requires effort and focus, just like any other job – and there are risks and pitfalls you need to consider.
