Tips for tackling the cost of living

Essential items are always going up but there are strategies you can use to save at the checkout.

With the cost of living continuing to rise, many older Australians are feeling the squeeze every time they visit the supermarket.

Prices for everyday essentials have increased significantly over the past few years, and even major retailers are under scrutiny for how they present discounts.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is currently pursuing Coles in the Federal Court, alleging the supermarket used “illusory” or misleading discounts on hundreds of household items, including dog food, toiletries, and pantry staples.

While this case, which follows an inquiry into supermarket pricing, plays out, the practical reality remains that groceries are more expensive and smart shopping is more important than ever.

For seniors on fixed or modest incomes, a little strategy can go a long way when trying to maintain quality without overspending.

One of the simplest ways to save is to shop seasonally. Fresh produce that’s in abundance, such as summer stone fruit or winter root vegetables, tends to be cheaper, fresher, and more flavoursome.

Planning meals around what’s in season not only cuts costs but often improves the overall quality of your diet.

Another effective approach is to compare unit pricing. It may be in small print, but the “price per 100g” or “per litre” listed on shelf labels and online shopping sites is a powerful tool for spotting the true best deal, especially when packaging sizes vary.

Even amid the ACCC’s ongoing claims that some discount practices are misleading, unit pricing remains a reliable measure of value.

Switching between brands can also deliver savings. Many supermarket home brands offer excellent quality at a lower price than big-name labels, particularly for staples such as rice, sugar, flour, cereals, and cleaning supplies.

It’s worth experimenting, as the difference between the substitute and the branded product is often minimal or even undetectable.

Shopping at multiple locations may also reduce your weekly bill. Local markets, independent grocers, and multicultural supermarkets frequently offer lower prices on fresh produce, spices, and specialty foods.

Seniors can also take advantage of mid-week specials, which some stores use to drive foot traffic on quieter days.

Additionally, bulk-buying is cost-effective when done selectively. Items with a long shelf life – for example, tinned goods, pasta, and toilet paper – can cost less per unit in larger quantities.

The key is to avoid bulk-buying perishables unless you’re certain you can use them before they spoil. The saying, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade” is instructive here. Some fresh fruit and vegetables can be frozen and others can be converted into jams, preserves, or pickles to extend their shlef life.

Finally, keeping a simple price diary can help you track patterns and identify real bargains over time. This doesn’t have to be elaborate; just jotting down prices of your most common purchases every few weeks can reveal which stores consistently offer better value.

While rising prices and ongoing scrutiny of supermarket tactics might be discouraging, you can still enjoy quality food without spending more than you can afford.
