Many seniors think that if they don’t receive the Age Pension, they can’t access government concessions – but that’s not necessarily true.

Even if you’re a fully self-funded retiree, you may still be eligible for a range of discounts and rebates that can help reduce everyday costs.

These can include lower electricity and gas bills, cheaper public transport, reduced council rates, discounted vehicle registration, and even savings on healthcare and prescription medicines.

A key to unlocking many of these benefits is the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC). While many people believe concessions are only available through the Pensioner Concession Card, the CSHC offers access to similar discounts for those who meet the income eligibility requirements, regardless of whether they receive the Age Pension.

This card can open doors to a range of cost-saving opportunities, including reduced Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) prescription prices, potential bulk-billed medical visits, and access to state, territory, and local concessions.

National Seniors Australia (NSA) has long advocated for a fairer and more consistent concessions system across the country. NSA argues that self-funded retirees, many of whom rely on savings to cover their retirement expenses, should not be disadvantaged simply because they do not draw a government pension.

According to NSA chief executive officer, Chris Grice, the current system is “fragmented, inconsistent, and, in many cases, outdated”. NSA continues to push for reforms to ensure all older Australians have equitable access to financial support.

To make the process easier, NSA offers a free online Concessions Calculator designed to help retirees discover what they may be entitled to, based on income, location, and personal circumstances. By entering a few basic details, you can quickly find out which concessions apply to you.

The message is clear: if you’re a self-funded retiree, don’t assume you are not entitled to concessions. Take a few minutes to check your eligibility.

With the rising cost of living impacting many older Australians, these concessions can make a meaningful difference.

As Chris notes, all retirees have worked hard to secure their futures, and you deserve fair access to the support available to you.
